Women Outlast NCAA Division II Riverhawks

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 26, 2007) — After only scoring 16 first half points, the John Brown Lady Golden Eagles fought their way back into the game in the second half to take a 55-52 win over NCAA Division II opponent Northeastern State (Okla.).

Sophomore forward Amber Vogts led John Brown (4-3) with 11 points, while the team’s leading scorer freshman forward Ashley Taylor grabbed the double-double with 10 points and 10 caroms.

At the 12:59 mark in the second half, JBU found themselves down sixteen after NSU’s Jazzel Quintana nailed a trey to give her team the 41-25 lead.

JBU, however, chipped away and cut it down to three (49-52) after Staffica Bain made back to back field goals with 2:26 remaining in the contest. After an NSU missed shot, freshman point guard Emily Ortiz drained a deep three-pointer to knot things up at 52. Bain and Ortiz finished with seven and six points respectively.

With under a minute remaining, Taylor came up with a huge block on Jessica White to give JBU back possession of the ball. JBU converted from the charity stripe on their next possession to take the two-point 54-52 lead. NSU had several opportunities to tie things up after three consecutive attempts, but John Brown finally got their hand on a rebound. NSU was forced to foul and send Taylor to the line where she hit 1-of-2 to give John Brown the 55-52 lead. NSU had one final chance to send it into overtime, but Quintana’s shot was off target as time expired.

Leading scorer for NSU (2-3) was White with 15 points and five boards. As a team, NSU shot 34% for the game. And JBU went from shooting 24% in the first half to over 50% in the second half for a total of 40% for the game.

With Sooner Athletic Conference play beginning on Thursday, head coach Jeff Soderquist knows this game will get them ready for conference play.

“We’ve got Oklahoma City on Thursday,” said Soderquist. “So, it was good to come out and get a win against a good team. This will give the girls an idea of what to expect in the SAC.”

John Brown travels to OCU on Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup. The men will also be in action that night against No. 1 ranked OCU at 8:00 p.m.
