Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 3, 2008) - In their first game for the New Year, the JBU Golden Eagles battled to the end with conference foe Lubbock Christian (Texas). But when it was over, LCU came out on top defeating JBU 61-57.
John Brown (8-4, 1-3) was only down one at half time, 25-26. LCU (7-4, 1-3), however, opened the second half on a 12-5 run and led 38-30 with 14:56 left in the game. But JBU tied things up at 40 after Joel Tesis scored inside at the 9:20 mark. Tesis finished with seven points and three rebounds.
John Brown went on a run of their own to take control, but with 5:34 left LCU reclaimed a one-point 49-48 lead after Bernardo Rocha made both ends of double-bonus free-throw attempts to give him 15 points on the night.
At 3:16, Andrius Mikutis put JBU up 55-54 after nailing a deep three in transition. But that’s when LCU’s Tommy Lane decided to take over, scoring five of the last seven points for Lubbock Christian. He ended with a game-high 22 points after shooting 8 for 16 including 3 of 6 from downtown.
Leading scorer for JBU was Jarrett McGriff with 13 points. James Manthe and Wes Brown added nine each.
As a team, John Brown shot 45% (20-44) for the game, while LCU shot 42% (22-53). JBU also took the rebounding edge 31-26 but committed 19 turnovers to 14 from LCU. John Brown also struggled from three-point range only connecting on 3 of 14 attempts (21%).
With this game in the books, the Golden Eagles return to the floor at home on Saturday, Jan. 5th against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 3 p.m. in Sooner Athletic Conference action.
