McGriff’s Tip-in Propels JBU to Victory

Siloam Springs, Ark. (January 10, 2008) — Junior guard Jarrett McGriff’s tip-in with 2.8 seconds remaining gave John Brown University a two-point, 67-65 win over Science and Arts of Okla. on Thursday night in Murray Sells Gymnasium.

With the score knotted at 65-65, JBU inbounded the ball with 26 seconds left. As time wound down, James Manthe drove to the basket and put up a short floater in the paint with four seconds left. With every player crashing the boards, McGriff got his fingertip on the ball and tipped in to give JBU the 67-65 lead.

USAO automatically called a timeout to draw up a play with under three seconds on the clock. But Dexter Williams three pointer out of the corner fell short as Joel Tesis got a hand up to contest the shot.

The win moves JBU to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in the SAC. USAO drops to 5-7 and 1-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

JBU had three players in double figures led by Joel Tesis with 16 points. McGriff and Manthe both added 15 points. McGriff also grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

"Jarrett has fought adversity since he's been here," said head coach Clark Sheehy. "His fifteen points was big but the eight rebounds was even bigger."

For USAO, Tim Nelson picked up 21 points while the team’s leading scorer, Thomas Woods was held to only eight points.

As a team, JBU shot 50% (25-50) from the floor, while USAO managed to hit 45% of their shots. JBU also out rebounded USAO 32-29.
