Edmond, Okla. (March 6, 2008) - The first round Sooner Athletic Conference tournament game for the Lady Golden Eagles was one to remember as both the No. 9 seed John Brown and the No. 8 seed Rogers State refused to go down without a fight. But in the end it was all JBU, as the Lady Golden Eagles ran away with the 62-50 win over the Lady Hillcats.
An aggressive defense focused first half saw the score deadlocked at 23-23 at the intermission.
In the second half, defense remained the theme as there were six lead changes throughout the half. But with 4:14 remaining in the game, Amber Vogts put JBU ahead once and for all after nailing a pair of freethrows to help JBU pull away for the 12 point win.
For the game, JBU shot 36% while holding RSU to 26%. JBU also won the battle of the boards 29-21.
Leading scorer for the game was Ashley Taylor with 16 points, and Micaela Cully added 15.
Azzie Knox finished with 15 for RSU.
The ladies move on to face the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Earlier in the year, JBU lost both regular season games to the Lady Stars.
“Oklahoma City will be a tough team that we’ll have to take care of the ball against,” said head women’s coach Jeff Soderquist. “If we can do that it will give us a chance to win the game.”
