Men's Soccer Loses to Trojans

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 6, 2008) — John Brown University men’s soccer squad fought tough on day two of the 26th Annual Fall Classic, but in the end, it was the Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) Trojans that walked away with the win after a 3-0 shutout over the Golden Eagles.

HLG struck early in the match after Estevao Franco scored in the 16th minute off the corner kick from Alvaro Torrecilla. Nine minutes later, Torrecilla had the favor returned after Kevin Zimmerman found him alone in the box for the 2-0 advantage.

The third goal for the Trojans came early in the second half after JBU committed a foul in the box to force a Gilberto Romero penalty kick which he put away for the 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles tried to rally later in the half but couldn’t overcome the margin.

“Defensively, we made some errors, but I wasn’t expecting it to be a shutout,” said head coach Bob Gustavson. “We had some opportunities, but we have to get better at finishing.”

Both teams were evenly matched in the shots category with HLG taking a 14-12 margin. However, JBU only managed two shots on goal to seven from HLG.

Defensively, Jeff Jelinek posted two saves for HLG while senior Spencer Watson had four for the Golden Eagles.

JBU (2-2) will be off for the entire week, but returns to the field next Saturday, Sept. 13 at home against Huston-Tillotson (Texas) at 3 p.m.
