Volleyball Splits at Baker Invitational

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 8, 2008) — Over the weekend, the John Brown University women’s volleyball finished 2-2 at the Baker (Kan.) Invitational. On day one the women fell 1-3 (14-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-27) to Benedictine (Kan.) but defeated Baker 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22). Day two saw the ladies open well beating Avila (Mo.) 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-14), but they fell 1-3 (25-18, 23-25, 16-25, 18-25) to William Jewell (Mo.) in their final match.

In the four matches, freshman outside hitter Kassie Ketter led the team in kills with 35 total (2.5 kpg) followed by senior right side hitter Laurae Marty with 31 (2.21 kpg). Junior middle hitter Christi Newton and sophomore outside hitter Kirsten Lee both notched 30 kills (2.14 kpg) a piece.

In the assist category, junior setter Britney Kerns and sophomore setter Alyssa Hanson each earned 69 (4.93 apg) and 67 (4.79 apg) assists respectively.

Defensively, junior libero Shannon Proctor led the way with 72 digs (5.14 dpg) overall. Meanwhile, Newton gathered 20 (1.43 bpg) blocks followed by Marty with 17 (1.21 bpg).

Up next, JBU (2-3) heads to Evangel (Mo.) to compete in the two-day Evangel Tournament taking place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13. The ladies face William Woods (Mo.) at 3 p.m. and St. Mary (Kan.) at 5 p.m. on Friday, and return on day two to face tournament host Evangel on Saturday at 11 a.m.
