Oklahoma City (November 15, 2008) - The John Brown University women’s volleyball team took Wayland Baptist (Texas) down to the wire during the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament championship game on Friday night, but in the end the women came up short falling 3-2, 25-15, 18-25, 25-20, 11-25, 13-15.
With the loss, the women close out the year at 21-11 overall.
JBU tied things up 13-13 in the fifth game after back to back service aces from sophomore Amber Wilson, but WBU’s Kimberli Harger clinched the title after consecutive kills to seal the win.
“It was a battle all the way to the end,” said head coach Robyn Daugherty. “Unfortunately, it was a tough way to lose, but I’m proud of what we accomplished this year.”
For JBU, sophomore Kirsten Lee paced the team with 15 kills. Senior Laurae Marty had 12, and sophomore Amber Wilson added 10 to go along with three service aces. Junior setter Britney Kerns totaled 24 assists with sophomore Alyssa Hanson picking up 20.
Defensively, junior libero Shannon Proctor had 47 digs and senior Aubrey Junker added 17. Wilson also picked up five blocks.
For their play during the tournament, Marty and Proctor were named to the All-Tournament team.
WBU (26-7), who plays tomorrow afternoon against regular season champs Lubbock Christian (Texas) for a berth in the NAIA National Tournament, got 13 kills from Harger. Anika Voigt totaled 46 assists, and Bethany Lewis had 24 digs.
