Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 15, 2008) - Both JBU basketball teams were in action on Saturday afternoon as they faced non-conference opponent Dallas Christian. In the early game, the women won decisively 91-33, and in the late game the men cruised to a 95-59 finish.
In women’s action, freshman post Chelsea Garrison paced the ladies with 22 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Katie Mangels added 13 and five rebounds.
As a team, JBU shot 45% (40-89) while holding DCC to 20% (13-65). JBU dominated the glass collecting 63 rebounds and also controlled the paint where they scored 60 of their 91 points. JBU also got 49 points off their bench.
For DCC, Meredith Hollis led with 12 points.
With the win, the women move to 5-0 overall. Up next, the women host the JBU Classic on Nov. 21-22. On Friday, the women face Mid America Nazarene (Kan.) at 8 p.m. And on Saturday, they’ll play Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 3 p.m.
In the men’s game, four players scored in double digits led by junior forward Davaughn Jackson with 15 points and five rebounds. Abel Galliguez scored 13. Ryland Allen added 13, and Wes Brown was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe for 11.
JBU controlled every aspect of the game from the tip. The Golden Eagles out shot DCC 52% to 39%, out rebounded them 44-24, and scored 30 points off of 21 DCC turnovers while only committing 16 turnovers that led to eight points for DCC.
JBU also got a huge lift from their second string with 42 points coming off the bench.
“That’s one of the things we try to talk about. I think we’ve got good depth,” said head coach Clark Sheehy. “It’s a long season. We’re not even a third of the way through the season, so we are going to need guys to come in fill roles, but I think our bench really did a great job tonight.”
For DCC, Christian Lawyer scored 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
With the win JBU moves to 6-0 overall. Up next, the Golden Eagles look to play their fourth game in seven days when they travel to NCAA Division I opponent Oral Roberts (Okla.). Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
