Men sweep Texas, pick up win over Pioneers
Plainview, Texas (January 31, 2009) — The JBU men’s basketball team closed out their Texas road trip with a 76-68 win over Wayland Baptist in Plainview on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Golden Eagles to 16-6 overall and 9-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Golden Eagles got major production from senior guard Jarrett McGriff who tallied 16 points and a dozen rebounds. Davaughn Jackson was one rebound shy of his tenth double-double on the year with 15 points and nine boards. Abel Galliguez added 15 all coming in the second half. Sophomore forward Andrius Mikutis scored 12 off the bench. And Cody Page tossed in 11 to round out the double digit scoring.
Joao Terra was top scorer for WBU (12-9, 4-9) with 14 points.
JBU jumped ahead 12-6 in the opening minutes but fell behind late in the first to go behind 27-32 by intermission.
In the second period, JBU turned the tables outscoring the Pioneers 49-36 to take home the eight point win.
Overall, JBU finished 30-of-57 (53%) from the floor including 6-of-14 (43%) from long distance. The rebounding edge also went to the Golden Eagles 36-22. JBU also outscored WBU in the paint 38-30.
For WBU, they went 26-of-52 (50%) on the day while also connecting on 6-of-14 treys. WBU did force 21 JBU turnovers while committing 18.
Up next for JBU is a home matchup against Northwestern Okla. State on Thursday at 8 p.m. Earlier in the year, JBU fell 65-72 against the Rangers in Alva.
