JBU Again Awarded Highest Honor for Fiscal Management

Siloam Springs, Ark. (June 1, 2009) — John Brown University has again been awarded the coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management in the nonprofit sector from Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates the efficiency of charitable organizations. This award marks the second consecutive year that JBU has received the top honor. Only nineteen percent of charities receive two consecutive four star ratings. JBU was given a 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances. It is estimated that approximately 25 percent of all charities evaluated by Charity Navigators will receive a 4-star rating. Of the five Arkansas charities with a 4-star rating, JBU is the only university to receive the top award. With a growing demand for financial accountability, Charity Navigator is providing the much needed evaluation of charities and the financial health people are looking for in a charity to donate money to. “We are grateful for the financial stability JBU has,” said Jim Krall, vice president for university advancement. “The leadership at JBU seeks to operate the university with high integrity and sound fiscal management. It is our alumni, friends and foundations that support JBU that deserve recognition. Their belief in our mission and financial support help us stay financially healthy.” In a time when the economy is struggling, JBU is continuing to receive donations that are allowing the university to expand. Plans are being made to begin construction on a 38,067 square-foot multi-purpose arena and a 500-seat 24,000 square foot performing arts facility in the next few months. Charity Navigator was founded in 2001 and has since become the nation’s largest evaluator of charities. Its rating system examines two areas of an organizations financial health—responsibility in functioning day to day as well as how well it positions itself to sustain its programs for years to come. Charities are given an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. Charity Navigator’s website (http://www.charitynavigator.org) provides donors with essential information that is needed to give greater confidence in the charitable decisions they make.
