Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 12, 2009) - The JBU men’s soccer team moved to 4-1 on the year after losing 3-2 to Illinois Institute of Technology in double overtime on Saturday evening.
JBU scored first off a Gabriel Duarte-Juan Iraola connection in the closing seconds of the first half to hold on to a one-point advantage during intermission.
In the 69th, IITU (3-5) tied things up after Liam Barrett scored unassisted.
IITU took the 2-1 lead in the 78th when Barrett fed teammate Andrew Lichaj.
When things seemed liked it was all over for JBU, the Golden Eagles scored the equalizer with thirty seconds left in the game to force overtime.
Both teams held each other scoreless in the first OT period, but in the 117th, IITU managed to break down JBU’s defense and sneak a shot pass JBU’s keeper Ryan Helmer for the 3-2 win.
Head coach John Miglarese said that the team has to learn from this loss and has some things to work on.
“We didn’t manage the game well when we were up 1-0,” said Miglarese. “We’ve got some things to fix, but we have a good season ahead of us. We’ll keep working.”
IITU outshot JBU 18-11 with a 10-3 shot-on-goal advantage.
Helmer picked up seven saves in the loss.
Up next, JBU travels to Northeastern State (Okla.) on Wednesday for a makeup game that was rained out last Wednesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
