Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 17, 2009) — It was a cold day on Saturday afternoon as the JBU men’s soccer squad squared off against SAC rival Oklahoma Baptist. Both teams came in warmed up and ready for a duel that ended in favor of JBU in a sudden death showdown. The Golden Eagles moved to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play after a 4-3 win over the Bison.

JBU took a 17-13 shots advantage with 11 on goal to nine from OBU (3-8-3, 1-4). Ryan Helmer picked up the win after turning away six. Jacob Hibbard posted seven saves for the Bison.

JBU netted the first goal of the game in the 12th minute when Gabriel Duarte broke free before facing a one-on-one with the keeper. Duarte drew Hibbard out and put it in the back for the 1-0 lead.

OBU quickly returned the favor in the 15th minute when Victor Costa scored unassisted. Costa struck again in the 31st on a breakaway for the 2-1 OBU lead.

JBU looked like they would head into the half down, but with :11 seconds remaining, Kieran Kentish served a beautiful cross from 25 yards out to Juan Iraola who finished with a header for the equalizer.

The score remained tied in the second period until Joel Thomas took advantage of an OBU error before beating the keeper for the 3-2 advantage. But in the 84th minute a JBU foul just outside the twenty gave Cristiano Sampaio a free kick opportunity which he managed to get by JBU’s wall and keeper to force overtime.

OBU had two attempts to score in the first extra period but came up empty. JBU didn’t have an attempt.

In the 114th minute, things looked bright for JBU as Nick Robbins got by the defense on the right side and crossed to Iraola at the six who ended the game with a diving header.

“I’m really proud of our guys. They are really tired after double overtime on Wednesday and overtime today,” said head coach John Miglarese. “They just kept fighting and fighting and fighting, and that showed a lot of character. I’m just really proud of the boys.”

JBU won’t have long to revel in the victory as they head to Mid-America Christian on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
