Men perfect in Cali

Oakland, Calif. (November 30, 2009) — The JBU men’s basketball team had a successful Thanksgiving weekend after picking up two road wins in the Holy Names (Calif.) Classic held last Friday and Saturday in Oakland. On Friday, the men knocked down Holy Names 87-77 and on Saturday, they followed up the performance with a 59-51 win over Cal State Maritime. The wins keep JBU’s perfect record intact at 8-0 overall.

In the first matchup, the Golden Eagles staved off a strong second half performance from Holy Names to secure the 10 point win. After leading 47-27 at halftime, JBU managed to let HNU (1-8) creep back into the game. JBU regrouped and was able to hold off the attempt and take the win down the stretch.

Sophomore Abel Galliguez picked up his scoring effort by leading the team with 23 points while dishing out four assists. Senior Davaughn Jackson dropped in 22 and eight boards, and junior Andrius Mikutis added 15 off the bench.

Holy Names was led by David Scott with 25.

Overall, JBU shot 54.9 percent (28-51) for the contest compared to 42 percent (26-62) from HNU. JBU also took the rebounding edge 47-24.

On day two, the Eagles faced a tougher opponent in Cal State-Maritime. In what was a low scoring affair, but JBU still managed to pull out the eight point, 59-51, win after only shooting 33 percent (4-12) from downtown and 60 percent (15-25) from the foul line.

The Keelhaulers outscored the Eagles 31-25 in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the 34-20 first half deficit.

For JBU, freshman Coleson Rakestraw led the way with 13 points followed by junior Sam Bartlett with 11 points and five caroms. Sophomore Adrian Miller also had a strong performance with seven points and 10 boards.

Andrew Medeiros poured in 16 points to lead CSM (2-6).

Overall, JBU shot 45.5 (20-44) percent from the floor compared to only 37.7 (20-53) percent from CSM. JBU also out rebounded CSM 31-26.

JBU returns to action on Thursday when they head to Southern Nazarene (Okla.) to resume conference play. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
