Women lose duel with Lady Bison
Shawnee, Okla. (January 14, 2010) — In a game that saw four ties and 13 lead changes, the fifth ranked Lady Bison of Oklahoma Baptist managed to hold off the JBU Lady Golden Eagles on Thursday night to take a 66-62 win in Shawnee.
The loss moves the ladies to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Junior Ashley Taylor had one of her best games of the season scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 boards to lead JBU. Junior Emily Ortiz was the only other Lady Eagle in double digits with 13.
The Lady Bison had three players finish with double figures led by Amy Pryor with 19.
JBU jumped out to an 18-7 lead with 12:54 left in the first half, but allowed OBU (15-1, 8-0) to go on a 9-0 run to come within two, 18-16. JBU pushed it back to a seven point game, but a 12-0 run from the Lady Bison gave OBU the 28-27 advantage heading into the locker room.
The second half was a teeter-totter battle all the way to the end. At the 1:48 mark, Pryor gave OBU the final lead change of the game after burying a deep trey for the 61-59 lead. JBU tried to convert on the other end but missed and fouled sending Taujhnae Travis to the line where she converted both for a 63-59 lead with under a minute left.
With 25 seconds left, JBU freshman Jessica Berlin drained her only bucket of the night, a three, to cut it down to a 63-62 OBU lead.
In the final 25 seconds, the Lady Bison were able to knock down their throws while fending off the Lady Eagles offensive attack, to hang on for the four point win.
“It came down to key possessions,” said head coach Jeff Soderquist. “We had a chance where we got several offensive rebounds but couldn’t put it away, and there were several possessions where we gave up offensive rebounds when we needed a stop.”
Overall, JBU shot 36 percent (21-58) from the floor while giving up 38 percent (23-60) to OBU. The Lady Bison won the rebounding battle 42-39 and also claimed the turnover ratio 15-17.
Up next, JBU looks to take on St. Gregory’s (Okla.) at home on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
