JBU STUDENT PASSES AWAY: CAMPUS SADDENED, CLASSES CANCELLED

Siloam Springs, Ark (April 6, 1998) — Joe Young, a freshman engineering major from Birmingham, Ala., died at 9 a.m., Sunday, April 5, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale due to injuries suffered in a car accident earlier in the week.

A memorial service has been scheduled for 10 a.m., April 6 in the Cathedral of the Ozarks. Morning classes at John Brown University have been cancelled for Monday, April 6. Regular classes will resume at 12 p.m.

Joe was active in racquetball, rock climbing and volunteered with JBU's ropes course. He was born in Goshen, Ind., on April 9, 1979.

"The John Brown University campus community is deeply saddened at the tragic events of the past several days," said Dr. Lee Balzer, president of JBU. "Our thoughts, and certainly our prayers, are with the Young family and those who knew Joe on campus. When we lose a member of our JBU family, everyone hurts."

Here is a recap of the events of the one-car accident.

* The accident happened at 3:30 p.m., April 2, one mile east of Siloam Springs on state Highway 16. * Anna Tarp's vehicle, a 1996 Dodge Neon, was traveling east on state highway 16. According to the state police report, Tarp lost control of the vehicle and the car traveled off the road striking a tree. * Brandon Cooper was a passenger in the front of the car and Joe Young was sitting in the back behind the driver. * Seat belts were in use by all three passengers, and both air bags deployed in the front. * Cooper and Tarp suffered no injuries except for cuts and bruises. * Young was immediately airlifted to Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark. * Young was a coma and in critical condition with a fractured femur, fractured pelvis, fractured ribs and a ruptured diaphram along with facial bleeding and inner cranial bleeding until he passed away on Sunday, April 5.

The students and faculty of JBU have established a benevolent fund for the Young family. These funds will be used to cover unexpected expenses for the family.
