Cedar Hill, Texas (August 31, 2010) - The JBU women’s soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 4-4 tie against Northwood (Texas) University on Tuesday afternoon in Cedar Hill.
The ladies, ranked 19th in the NAIA’s preseason poll, entered the contest as the favorite but found themselves in a battle. JBU took an early lead after junior Cam Martin scored in the 10th minute. But Northwood responded in the 27th with a goal from Teresa Torres for the 1-1 tie.
JBU took a 2-1 advantage early in the second period off a goal by senior Sarah Kidd, but the Knights kept their composure and knotted it up at 2-2 when Sian Webster scored.
Northwood then took a two-point advantage after a JBU own goal in the 71st and a goal by Natalie Carter via the assist from Kristin Laborde in the 74th.
Down by two, JBU stepped up their play and managed to put in goals in the 78th and 81st minutes off the feet of Kidd and fellow senior Camille Malkiewicz respectively. Freshman Ashley Cochran picked up the assist on Malkiewicz’s goal. This would force overtime tied at four a piece.
JBU outshot NU 5-3 in the overtime periods put neither team could convert as time elapsed ending the match in a draw.
Now at 0-0-1, the women will take the next nine days off before heading to Ohio to compete in the two-day Mt. Vernon Nazarene Tournament. They will take on Mt. Vernon on Friday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. (EST), and take on Cincinnati Christian the following day also at 2 p.m.
