Soccer floods OWU with goals
Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 25, 2010) — Oklahoma Wesleyan came in touting a 6-0 record on Saturday afternoon, but the JBU men’s soccer team wasn’t threatened, shellacking OWU 4-1.
It was a defensive battle during the first 45 minutes as neither team could find the mark. But in the 58th minute, senior Gabriel Duarte found an opening after a scramble in the box and put JBU ahead 1-0. Duarte’s goal put a crack in OWU’s defensive dam, but the Eagles remained focused and found a goal of their own after Hector Herrera scored off a rebound in the 65th minute.
In the 75th minute, OWU’s dam began to fall when JBU senior Sasha Viatrov blasted a shot from outside the box that easily found the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage. And less than two minutes later, senior Juan Iraola put away a cross from freshman Ramon Martinez to go ahead by two.
The goal of the day came off the foot of Viatrov in the 86th minute when he struck from 35 yards out with a shot that bent in over the outstretched arms of OWU's keeper for the 4-1 finisher.
Freshman Pablo Garcia picked up three saves in the win.
JBU improves to 4-3 on the year and play their final non-conference matchup on Tuesday in Muskogee, Okla. versus Bacone College at 4 p.m.
