Waxahachie, Texas (November 2, 2010) — The JBU women’s basketball team defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 50-40 on Tuesday night to open their 2010-2011 season with a 1-0 record.

Sophomore guard Anna Parish led JBU with 12 points after shooting 4-of-7 from the field including 3-of-6 from long distance. Senior Katie Mangels chipped in with 11, and freshman Sierra Shipley added nine.

For SAGU, Chelsea Jones tossed in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead all scorers.

JBU led by 19 points in the second half but hit a drought and went scoreless for 11 minutes, which allowed SAGU to cut the deficit to 43-36. This ignited a 7-0 JBU run that pushed the Eagles ahead 50-36 with 2:51 left to play. SAGU held JBU scoreless the rest of the way and closed out the game with a 4-0 run, but it was too little to late as JBU took the 10 point win.

Overall, JBU shot 35% (19-54) from the floor and 32% (8-25) from three point range. SAGU, meanwhile, struggled only making 29% (16-56) of their attempts from the field. JBU dominated the boards and claimed a 46-29 rebound margin, but the Eagles struggled to take care of the ball by committing 21 turnovers.

JBU returns to action on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to take on Jarvis Christian (Texas).
