Lady Eagles Back in the Win Column
Shawnee, Okla. (February 8, 2011) — The JBU women’s basketball made their return to the hardwood on Tuesday afternoon and picked up a big road win after beating Oklahoma Baptist 58-55 in conference play.
With the win, JBU improves to 17-6 overall and 11-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OBU, meanwhile, falls to 8-15 and 6-9 in the SAC.
Chelsea Garrison led JBU with a double-double of 13 points of 10 rebounds, and Emily Ortiz finished with nine.
For OBU, Gabriell Mattox finished with a game-high 29 points and nine rebounds, while Samantha Smith added 12 points and 10 boards.
After a see-saw battle in the first period, JBU found themselves down six, 25-31, at halftime. However, the Lady Eagles managed to hang tough and tie it up at 38 after a three pointer from Sierra Shipley with 12:37 left in the game.
With 1:47 left to play, JBU held on to a narrow 56-53 edge, but Mattox helped the Lady Bison cut into the lead after knocking down a pair from the foul line to pull the Lady Bison within one, 55-56.
After a missed opportunity on the next JBU possession, OBU had several chances to take the lead with under a minute but continuously came up empty despite grabbing several offensive rebounds. Eventually JBU came away with a defensive rebound and got fouled with :09 seconds left to play. But a technical foul on OBU’s Bridget Reynolds would pretty much seal the deal for the Lady Bison with four JBU freebies coming up. Anna Parish stepped up and went 1-of-2 on the technical shots, but Ortiz would still have a chance to seal the deal with double bonus foul shot attempts to follow. Ortiz hit the first but missed the second with the Lady Bison coming away with the rebound. OBU tried to get a clean look at it but came up empty as time expired.
For the game, JBU shot 34.5 percent (10-of-32), while giving up 36.4 percent (20-of-55) to OBU. JBU won the rebounding battle 42-36, but committed 16 turnovers while only forcing 13.
Up next, the women return to the road to face No. 2 Oklahoma City on Thursday, February 10. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
