John Sheehy to be Inducted into MBCA Hall of Fame
Siloam Springs, Ark. (April 26, 2011) — The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association has announced that former John Brown University head men’s basketball coach John Sheehy has been elected to the MBCA Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011. Sheehy will be inducted at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony taking place on Saturday, April 30 in Springfield, Missouri.

- Stephanie Phillips – Kickapoo
- Bill Sodemann – Parkway West
- Ray Steinhoff – New Haven
Sheehy spent 18 seasons (1989-2007) at the helm of the JBU men’s basketball program before retiring at the end of the 2006-2007 season. During that time, he guided JBU to wins in both the 1991 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Men’s Basketball Championship and the 2005 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
With an overall career record of 535 wins, Sheehy is a four-time Conference Coach of the Year with honors coming in the Sooner Athletic Conference, Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Arkansas Junior College Conference, and the South Central Association. He is currently the all-time winningest coach in JBU history with 313 wins and most recently had the basketball court in the Bill George Arena named in his honor.
Sheehy began his head coaching career at Puxico High School (Mo.) in 1971, followed by a one year stint at Liberty High School in Mountain View, Mo. He moved to the college ranks as head coach at Williams Baptist (Ark.), formerly Southern Baptist Junior College, in 1974 and stayed in that position until 1980. From there, he shifted to Truett McConnell Junior College (Ga.) for the 1981 and 1982 campaigns. Sheehy then traveled west to Howard Payne (Texas), where he was an assistant for eighteen months before taking over the reins in the middle of the 1983-84 season. He remained with Howard Payne until coming to John Brown in 1989.
