After a long, arduous battle, the JBU women’s soccer team tied with Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field to end the Lady Eagles Classic.
Elizabeth High shot a goal after a short break away at the 19:14 mark, which blew past the keeper in the corner of the goal. JBU held the 1-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
After a gruesome second half, Stacy Culbertson scored a goal for Mount Vernon in the last five minutes, which forced overtime.
Both teams fought hard in two overtime periods, yet neither could find the back of the net ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
JBU head coach Scott Marksberry was thankful for the tie after playing with less team members than Mount Vernon Nazarene.
“It’s a hot day, with two games back to back,” said Marksberry. “We were very, very tired and [Mount Vernon] brought about thirty-four girls in for this game, and they played almost all of them. We were running out of gas and they were definitely much fresher, but I love the fact that we hung on for the tie for sure!”
The Lady Eagles next home game will be Friday, September 9 at 1:30 p.m. against Baker (Kan.).
