JBU SIFE Captures Third in National Competition
Siloam Springs, Ark (May 15, 2003) - The John Brown University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team captured the third place national title Tuesday at the annual SIFE national competition. “The JBU SIFE team has established a program of excellence that has now rightly gained national acclaim. I am proud of the work these students and their faculty advisors are doing. They are an excellent representation of the top-quality business education that happens every day at John Brown University," said JBU President Lee Balzer. The road to this national competition began in March, when more than 800 SIFE teams from colleges and universities across the nation made presentations at several regional competitions. After winning its regional competition in April, the JBU team joined 150 other SIFE teams from across the nation at the national competition this week in Kansas City. The 15-member JBU team competed Monday for a panel of 20-25 judges and was named one of the “Sensational 16” (top 16 SIFE teams in the nation). This qualified the team to compete again on Tuesday morning, when they were named to the “Fantastic Four,” a first in JBU SIFE history. Tuesday afternoon the top four teams competed for a panel of 140 judges, all of whom are CEOs and VPs of major companies such as Wal-Mart, Procter and Gamble, Home Depot, Radio Shack and Sprint. The top four teams in the nation earned the following places in final competition: National Champion: Drury University; second place: University of Arizona; third place: John Brown University; fourth place: University of Texas- Pan American. The JBU team earned the 2nd runner up trophy and a cash prize of $3,000. During regional and national competitions, each SIFE team has 40 minutes to present to the judges. The competition consists of a presentation articulating an overview of the team’s projects for the year and the measured outcomes. Each team must demonstrate its effectiveness at meeting SIFE objectives: teaching free enterprise, helping entrepreneurs succeed, developing personal success skills in themselves and others, and teaching ethics and social responsibility. “I cannot begin to describe my pride in the entire SIFE team, especially in the efforts of the regional and national competition teams,” said Joe Walenciak, JBU SIFE sponsor and chair of the division of business at JBU. “Our students represented JBU and Arkansas very well.” John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,700 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
