Soccer teams post shutouts on Wayland
Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 1, 2011) — Both JBU soccer teams were in action on Saturday against Wayland Baptist (Texas). The women cruised by the Lady Pioneers with a 4-0 win, and the men earned a 3-0 victory.
In ladies action, freshman Adrienne Kennedy scored the first JBU goal after finishing unassisted at the 15:05 mark. Less than three minutes later, JBU struck again when freshman Laura Garcia scored to increase the JBU lead. JBU held the 2-0 cushion heading into the break.
In the second half, Garcia scored again after putting away the double-assist by junior Cheyenne Padgett and senior Emily Anderson at the 58:00 minute mark. And in the 73rd minute Padgett picked up her second assist of the match after feeding Amber Smith in the box, who tapped in for her first goal of the year.
JBU outshot the Lady Pioneers 27-4 with a 12-3 shots on goal advantage. Junior keeper Faith Thurman picked up three saves.
In men’s action, things started off slowly for both teams, but in the 38th minute sophomore Brandon Sikes booted in the assist from freshman Daniel Forry giving JBU the advantage.
After taking the one goal lead into the break, JBU opened the second half with the momentum and managed to score in the 57th minute when sophomore Andre Sandiford-Williams lofted a shot from about 35 yards out that sailed over the WBU keeper. Freshman Martin Gonzalez picked up the assist.
Not to be outdone, Sikes adding to his total when he lobbed a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net giving JBU the 3-0 lead as time began to run out on the Pioneers.
JBU freshman Matt Henry earned the shutout after posting three saves.
Up next, the Golden Eagles travel to Oklahoma to face the Stars of Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The men play at 2 p.m. and the women play at 4.
