Oklahoma City (January 7, 2012) - The JBU women’s basketball team put up a great fight against No. 1 Oklahoma City on Saturday afternoon. But it was the Lady Stars that walked away with the 64-61 win after 40 minutes of action.
JBU (8-8, 2-6) fought their way back into the game after being down 11, 41-30, at halftime.
With 16:26 to go in the game, senior Chelsea Garrison gave JBU life after sparking a 13-0 run helping JBU take a 49-47 lead with 10:35 remaining.
From this point, the teams battled back and forth through three ties and four lead changes. But the Lady Stars eventually took the lead for good after a bucket from Kayla MacKenzie made it 60-58 with 3:25 left.
JBU had a final chance to force overtime, but sophomore Sierra Shipley’s three point attempt with 5.0 seconds remaining missed allowing OCU (14-0, 8-0) to hang on for the win.
Garrison led JBU with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Shipley pitched in with 16. Sophomore Jessica Berlin also finished in double figures with 14.
For OCU, Dietra Caldwell finished with 17 points, while Lauren Gober and Nicollette Smith added 11 and 10, respectively.
Overall, JBU shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, while giving up 45.5 percent (25-of-55) to OCU. OCU took the rebounding edge 35-29, but committed 26 turnovers while forcing JBU to commit 22.
Up next, JBU travels to Alva, Okla. to take on Northwestern Okla. State on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m.
