Coleson Rakestraw led JBU to a 70-65 overtime win over Wayland Baptist on Thursday.

Plainview, Texas (January 19, 2012) — In their second overtime game in as many weeks, the JBU men’s basketball team once again pulled out the win, this time over Wayland Baptist (Texas) 70-65.

The win lifts JBU to 14-5 overall and 6-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.  Wayland Baptist, meanwhile, falls to 8-10 and 2-8 in the SAC.

After leading 33-32 at the half, JBU found themselves down 57-52 with four minutes left in the game.  But a 7-0 run sparked by a three from junior Coleson Rakestraw, followed by an Adrian Miller bucket, and capped off by Andy Garcia in the paint, gave JBU the 59-57 lead with 1:22 on the clock.

WBU wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and took the one point lead after TJ Jacobs buried a trey to go ahead 60-59 with 14 seconds left.  But a careless WBU foul would send JBU’s Miller to the line with the chance for the lead.  Miller sank the first to tie it up at 60 but missed the second giving WBU a chance to win.  Miller finished with 14 points.

After a timeout, the Pioneers had a shot for the win, but Jamie Eisenger’s 3-point attempt came up empty sending the game into overtime.

JBU fell behind early in OT, 65-60, but another Rakestraw dagger pulled the Golden Eagles within three, 65-63, with 1:56 to play.  JBU buckled down on defense and forced a WBU miss and pushed it up to Rakestraw, who got fouled while scoring on the inside.  Rakestraw converted the three point play giving JBU the 66-65 edge with 1:19 to go.  Rakestraw finished with a game high 18 points.

On the other end, JBU forced another WBU miss and milked some clock before Miller found Garcia cutting underneath for the easy lay-in and the 68-65 lead with 13 seconds left.

WBU had a final chance to tie, but Eisenger missed his 3-point attempt and JBU came away with the rebound.  WBU fouled and sent JBU’s EJ McWoods to the line where he sealed the deal by making both free-throws to finish with 14 points.

For WBU, Jacobs, Robert Curtis, and Johnny Terra each had 12 points, while Eisenger finished with 11.

Overall, JBU hit 45.3 percent (24-of-53) from the floor, while holding WBU to 42.9 percent (24-of-56).  JBU dominated the glass winning the rebounding battle 42-30.

Up next, the men travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on the Chaparrals of LCU on Saturday at 3 p.m.
