Eagles beat Stars on Senior Night

The 13th ranked John Brown University Golden Eagles beat Oklahoma City University Stars 71-68 Saturday evening during family weekend and senior night.

This brings JBU's record to 22-6, 14-6 in the SAC. OCU drops to a record of 12-12, and 9-11 in conference play.

Three JBU players finished in double-digits led by junior EJ McWoods with 16. Senior Andy Garcia put in 15 points followed by red shirt junior Abel Galliguez adding 14. Senior Adrian Miller led JBU in assists with seven and rebounds with nine. Freshman Max Hopfgartner followed in rebounds with six and Garcia with five.

OCU had four players finish with double-digits led by Troynell Adams with 14. Charlton Jones and Orlan Jackman both finished with 13 points, and Cory Nicholson added 10. Jones led OCU in assists with six. Adams and Tim Morton both finished with five rebounds for OCU. 

During the first half, both teams came onto the court aggressively. JBU hit the boards first, but soon after the clock started OCU took a five-point lead. JBU answered with a 10-0 run to eventually match the five-point lead. After that, the game remained neck-and-neck with six ties in the half. Going into the locker, the score settled at 31-31.

In the second half, JBU scored first again, but the same pattern occurred all throughout; each team matched bucket-for-bucket resulting in seven ties during the remainder of the game. At the end of the game, JBU had a four point lead at the 2:03 mark with a three-pointer made by Abel Galliguez. OCU answered with a field goal, but was fouled and completed the three-point play bringing the deficit to one point. As the clock dwindled down, OCU tried to foul to catch up, but JBU held the lead and made free throws winning the game 71-68.

JBU tied with OCU in the paint shooting 41.7 percent (24-of-51). However, in three-point range JBU shot 42.9 percent (9-of-21) and OCU only shot 25.0 percent (3-of-12). JBU also won the free throw game hitting 82.4 percent (14-of-17) while OCU hit 70.8 percent (17-of-24). OCU rebounded 29 while JBU only rebounded 25.

Next, JBU faces the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. for their last home game of the season.
