Arkansas sex offender info on Internet
(September 2, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Information on Arkansas sex offenders should be available on the Internet soon. A law passed by the Legislature this year authorizes making personal information on the state's high-risk sex offenders -- more than 11-hundred of them -- public. Arkansas will be the 38th state to post offenders' names, addresses, photographs and crimes on a Web site. Civil libertarians argue that the Web sites cause sex offenders to be shamed and harassed even after they've served their sentence. But the U-S Supreme Court has upheld similar Web sites in Alaska and Connecticut, saying they are regulatory -- not punitive -- in nature. The information will be accessible through links on the state Crime Information Center Web site, w-w-w-dot-A-C-I-C-dot-org.
