JBU Men’s Soccer Defeats Oklahoma Wesleyan

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 2, 2003) — After being behind 1-0 at the half, JBU came back with 4 quick goals in the early stages of the second half to defeat the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan by a score of 4-1. Four JBU players contributed goals with senior Solomon Joe scoring the first one at the 44 minute mark of the second half. His goal was followed by senior Jeremy Thomas’ goal at the 43 minute mark on an assist by sophomore Kyle Carter. Sophomore Seth Hildebrant, also with an assist by Carter, scored the third Golden Eagle goal at the 42 minute mark and sophomore Daniel Fleming rounded out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 41:27 to go in the game.

Goalkeeper junior Pablo Fernandez, honorable mention NAIA All-American in 2002, had 9 saves to lead JBU’s defensive attack.

Following the victory, Coach Gustavson expressed pleasure with the win, but was disappointed about falling behind early in the game. “We need to be prepared mentally at the beginning of the game rather than waiting until we fall behind,” stated Gustavson. “We should get better as the season goes along because we’re playing a lot of young and inexperienced at the college level players.”

JBU will travel to Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas for a Saturday afternoon non-conference match. The Golden Eagles will return to Siloam Springs for a game against Bacone College on Tuesday September 9 at 3:30 pm.
