JBU Volleyball Goes 5-0 At College of the Ozarks Tournament

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 8, 2003) — The Golden Eagles volleyball team upped their season record to 8-1 with 5 match wins this past weekend Pt. Lookout, Missouri at the College of the Ozarks Tournament. Although JBU was 5-0 for the tournament, the team finished in 2nd place due to losing one game in their match with Tabor University. Central Methodist College took first in the tourney with a 5-0 mark but had no game losses during the 2-day tournament.

The Golden Eagle wins were over Oklahoma Wesleyan University 30-26, 30-18 and 30-24, Central Baptist College 30-9, 30-10 and 30-8, Tabor College 30-28, 22-30, 30-25 and 30-21, Lindsey Wilson College 30-26, 30-26 and 30-25, and Bethel College 30-21, 30-23 and 30-22.

In the individual stats department, sophomore Meghann Wharton led the offensive attack with 48 kills and 16 service aces. Freshman Rachel Melby continued to lead JBU in assists as she collected 96 assists in the 5 matches. On defense, sophomore Elisa Evans, with 21 blocks and sophomore Christine Wells with 59 digs were the Golden Eagle leaders. Senior Kemi Rogers contributed 16 service aces for the winning cause.

After winning the 5 matches, Coach Robyn Gordon had the following to say about the way the Golden Eagles played in the tournament. “We took another step forward in getting our offense where we want to be. The setters and hitters have been working hard on timing and it paid off this weekend. Our primary passers, Jairin Schrader and Christine Wells, continue to provide excellent passing for us. Our team was disappointed in dropping a game to Tabor, causing us to lose the tiebreaker for the championship in the tournament. This temporary setback should help to make us better in the future at concentrating throughout the entire match. This was our 14th year at the C of O tournament and we have never gone undefeated there before. To go undefeated is something of which we can be proud.”

JBU continues play this week with matches at Harding University on Tuesday, September 9, and then travels to Lamoni, Iowa to play in the Graceland University Tournamant on September 12 and 13. The Golden Eagles will return home for a match with Bacone College on Tuesday, September 16.
