John Brown University Men’s Soccer Ties Bacone College

Siloam Springs, Ark. (September 9, 2003) — John Brown University scored at the 41:00 mark on a header by senior Federico Suarez assisted by freshman Rodrigo Juliao to take a 1-0 lead at halftime. Junior goalkeeper Pablo Fernandez had 6 saves in the first half to preserve the halftime lead. However, early in the second half at 43:13, Eric Lee of Bacone tied the score on an unassisted play.

Fernandez continued with his goalkeeping play having 4 saves in the second half to keep the score knotted at end of regulation play.

Two 10-minute overtime periods resulted in no score by either team. With this being a non-conference game, the score stood and the game ended in the tie.

“We are extremely disappointed to end a game in a tie. Our offense must improve for us to be competitive as we enter the Sooner Conference schedule. We came out strong with an early score, but just had too much of an unbalanced attack the remainder of the afternoon” commented Coach Bob Gustavson following the disappointing game.

The Golden Eagles are now 2-0-1 on the season and will continue action this weekend at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas for a 1:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon. The team will return to action in Siloam Springs the following weekend for the 21st Annual JBU Fall Soccer Classic.
