Siloam Springs, Ark (September 10, 2003) - John Brown University has received a $10,000 grant from The Chatlos Foundation, Inc. of Florida. The funds will be used for new faculty orientation. In response to a growing enrollment, JBU welcomed one of the largest groups of new faculty this year. JBU is taking an innovate approach to ensure that new faculty are well prepared for their positions. Funds from the Chatlos Foundation are supporting the new faculty orientation and seminar. All new faculty participated in a three-day orientation in August and are strongly encouraged to attend a 12-week seminar that focuses on the integration of faith and learning. Attendees of the seminar will also be assigned a mentor who has a minimum of three years experience and is a veteran of JBU’s Teagle Summer Institutes. “Most college professors have been taught how to excel in their discipline, but not how to teach,” President Lee Balzer said. “It is even more rare to encounter someone who has been taught how their faith should inform their teaching.” Grant monies will help JBU provide each faculty member a reduced teaching responsibility, so they will be able to attend the seminar. During the 12-week seminar faculty will study and discuss Christian world views, the history and purpose of higher education, characteristics of students, teaching and learning techniques and preferences, course development for higher learning and balancing teaching, scholarship and other Christian service. “Our intention is to provide a high-quality orientation program for new faculty that other institutions similar to ours can emulate,” Dr. Cal Piston, associate dean of academic affairs said.
