Governor Huckabee: revised plan unveiled soon
(September 16, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee says he expects to release a revised education reform proposal within the next 10 days or so. Huckabee says the new plan combines the best of all ideas he has received to overhaul education, and offers specific legislation ahead of the special session. He announced it last night on the Arkansas Educational Television Network. Huckabee says his plan would still include a minimum enrollment cutoff for consolidating high schools in districts that cannot meet academic standards in an economically efficient way, though he would not say if it would remain a 15-hundred student district. Legislators failed during the regular session that ended in April to reach agreement on major education reforms after talks broke down, largely because of disagreement on whether to consolidate small schools that cannot meet academic standards in an economically efficient way.
