Siloam Springs, Ark (October 24, 2003) — Two students from John Brown University received recognition and nomination for a prestigious acting competition during in earlier this month. Sophomore Evelyn Baldwin and junior Emily Culella were nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Competition. Founded by the late Irene Ryan, who is best remembered for her role of “Granny Clampett” in The Beverly Hillbillies, the competition offers scholarships to the school of choice for winning competitors. The actresses will advance to the regional American College Theater Festival (ACTF) competition that will be held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in February. Top winners from each region will receive scholarships and advance to the national competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The actresses were a part of the JBU theater workshop production of “Night of January 16th,” a courtroom drama staged Oct. 9-12 in the Jones Recital Hall on the JBU campus. Evelyn Baldwin played Nancy Lee Faulkner, the widow of Bjorn Faulkner. Faulkner’s death is the focus of the trial in “Night of January 16th”. Emily Culella played Karen Andre, Bjorn Faulkner’s mistress and Nancy’s nemesis. “I think Evelyn and Emily played off of each other,” said Jason Hough, director of the performance said. “The rivalry of their characters in the script helped them to push each other when it came to their acting”. The show was entered in the American College Theater Festival as an associate entry. A professional respondent, professor Jay Fields of Missouri Southern, critiqued the production. Fields, as a critic, could nominate up to two actors or actresses for the Irene Ryan competition. “Mr. Fields was very impressed with the whole cast,” Hough said. “After the critique he expressed praise for the performances of Evelyn and Emily.” Last year was the first year that JBU entered into the ACTF. Two actresses in “Wit” were also nominated. John Brown University is a private university with an enrollment of more than 1,800 students from 42 states and 45 countries. JBU is a member of Arkansas’ Independent Colleges and Universities and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.
