JBU Conference Champs in Men’s Soccer

Siloam Springs, Ark. (October 31, 2003) — It is official now. The Golden Eagles of John Brown University are the regular season champions of the Sooner Athletic Conference in men’s soccer. St. Gregory’s University defeated Southern Nazarene 2-1 on Thursday to enable JBU to clinch the regular season title with 4 wins and 1 loss.

Going into this week’s action, JBU, Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Christian University were all tied at 3-1 for the top position in the conference. On Tuesday, JBU defeated Oklahoma Christian 2-1 and had to wait until Thursday’s game between SNU and St. Gregory’s to see who would be the outright champions.

Coach Bob Gustavon, the JBU soccer coach, had these remarks after learning of the championship. “It is very gratifying to be the regular season conference champs. Last year, we finished last in the regular season but came on to win the SAC tournament and eventually qualified for the nationals. Our goal now is to win the tournament again and continue to advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the 2nd consecutive year.”

With the regular season conference championship, JBU earned a bye in the first round of SAC Tournament play and will play next Tuesday at the Edmond Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles will face the lowest surviving seed after Saturday’s first round action. Game time will be either 6 pm or 8 pm depending on the how the bracket is set after the first round.
