Task force will study improving graduation rates

(November 6, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee says a new task force will come up with suggests to improve Arkansas higher education system. One thing that the state's colleges and universities won't see, however, is a place on the agenda in an upcoming special legislative session. Huckabee has lamented Arkansas' ranking near the bottom in the percentage of residents with a college degree. He said a 15-member commission will begin looking at ways to improve college graduation rates. Colleges and universities this week challenged the way money is spread out and asked that a special session be called to deal with higher education funding. Huckabee said he didn't think it was likely that institutions of higher learning would be addressed at a session now dedicated to grades "K" through 12.
