Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 8, 2003) - Taking command early in the game, the Golden Eagles pulled ahead for a 76-69 victory over the Pirates of Park University on Saturday afternoon in Siloam Springs. Sparked by 12 first half points by Honorable Mention All-American Brandon Cole, JBU took a 38-32 lead to the locker room at intermission. The Pirates had taken the lead at 25-23 with 5:12 remaining on the clock in the first half before a 12 point run on 4 three pointers by the Golden Eagles gave the home team a 35-25 lead at the 1:38 mark of the first half. Frosh Brandon Brown began the 3-point barrage, followed by senior Abdiel Mendieta, sophomore Drew Stanek and frosh Adam Workman.
JBU continued to dominate in the second half taking a 12 point lead with 4:12 remaining in the game. At one point in the second period, 4 minutes elapsed on the clock without a score by either team. Cole’s 24 points led the way for the Golden Eagles with Mendieta pitching in 14 to aid in the winning effort. Junior transfer Ryan Woodson brought down 9 rebounds to lead JBU on the boards. Park was led by Chip Weber with 16 points.
“Our shooting, especially from the 3 point range, improved this afternoon. With 10 of 14 threes in the first half and 16 of 25 overall, that is a big plus for us. That was definetly the key to the win today,” commented Coach John Sheehy following the win. “We still have a little trouble finding our offensive rhythm. We had more turnovers than I would like to see. We are working hard in practice to correct some of our offensive mistakes and will be good offensively when we have all the kinks ironed out. The defensive effort was great this afternoon.”
With today’s victory, the Golden Eagles move to 2-0 and will face Messenger College on Tuesday evening in another home contest. Game time is 8:00 pm in Murray Sells Arena.
