(November 12, 2003) - (Fayetteville-AP) -- The state of Arkansas is being sued for offering "Choose Life" license plates but NOT offering pro-choice plates. Tamara Brackett claims her free-speech rights are being violated by a law that authorizes "Choose Life" license plates. She is suing in federal court. The law, passed this year, offers the "Choose Life" plates that went on sale in August, one day after the Arkansas attorney general's office issued an opinion saying that any court review would likely find the law authorizing the plates unconstitutional. As of October 31st, the state had issued 446 of the "Choose Life" plates. According to Brackett's suit, "The state of Arkansas has opened a state-created forum to one viewpoint alone in the ongoing public controversy over abortion." Brackett's attorney, Doug Norwood, says the case is about free-speech rights, not abortion rights.
