JBU Wins Region VI Soccer Crown

Siloam Springs, Ark. (November 15, 2003) — In a shootout on Saturday afternoon, JBU finally got the best of Southern Nazarene on the 8th penalty shot to notch the win. Regulation play ended 1-1 after Seth Hildebrant scored a come from behind goal on an assist by Rodrigo Juliao in the last 15 minutes of the game to knot the score. This took the game into overtime and neither team was able to seal the victory with a goal in the two overtime periods. After the second overtime, the game went to a shootout and on the 8th penalty kick; Hildebrant kicked the ball past the SNU goalkeeper. SNU still had one shot to stay alive, but JBU Honorable Mention All-American goalkeeper Pablo Fernandez made the save to preserve the victory for the Golden Eagles.

The win clinches the NAIA Region VI championship and an automatic berth into the NAIA National Tournament to be played in Olathe, Kansas November 19-25. This is the second straight year for the JBU soccer team to qualify for the national tournament.

“Our guys did a fabulous job coming back from a defeat in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament to win the Region Championships. We beat a very good team today that had beaten us at home 3-0 earlier in the year,” commented Coach Bob Gustavson on the win. “We want to use this as momentum for the nationals next week.”
