(December 3, 2003) - (Little Rock-AP) -- The House speaker wants to divert money from state agencies to public schools as a way to address a court mandate to improve Arkansas' unconstitutional school system. Critics at a joint meeting of the House and Senate education committees said the switch didn't take inflation into account and could harm other state services. Legislators are to go into special session on Monday to discuss education. Also in a meeting yesterday, the state Department of Education gave legislators three proposed funding formulas that could be used to determine how the state would distribute new education money to school districts. Two sets of igures are tied to a plan Governor Huckabee backs. The other involves putting more money in the current system.
