Governor's education proposal gets hearing today
(December 15, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- Governor Huckabee's proposal to overhaul the public schools is scheduled for its first legislative test today. The proposal includes a call for consolidation of school districts with fewer than 500 students. The Senate Education Committee plans to review the measure as the second week of the special session begins. Meanwhile, House legislation to reform public education without closing small schools for at least two years is due today before the House Education Committee. The measure received committee support last week, but its sponsor, Representative Paul Weaver of Violet Hill, wants it amended to raise the minimum teacher salary requirement.
