State struggles with homeless students

(December 15, 2003) — (Little Rock-AP) -- While legislators debate better schools for Arkansas' children, many Arkansans don't realize that six-thousand of those students don't even have homes. State officials have been coping with the needs of homeless students long enough to have a worker in place in each of the 300-plus school districts to work with them to help ensure their needs are met. Homeless students can receive counseling, meals, transportation and tutoring, all free. Despite the programs, though, officials acknowledge that there are homeless children who are not enrolled in school at all.
