Speaker: resolution not likely before court date

(January 19, 2004) — (Little Rock-AP) -- House Speaker Herschel Cleveland says he doubts legislators will finish work on reforming Arkansas's public school system before Thursday. That's when the state Supreme Court is to hear oral arguments to assess what legislators have done to meet a November 2002 court order. The order from the high court required the state to overhaul Arkansas' public school system and provide equal access to an adequate education. Legislators aren't meeting today because it's the Martin Luther King Junior holiday.
