Siloam Springs, Ark. (February 7, 2004) - No. 16 John Brown University came back from an earlier season defeat at the hands of St. Gregory’s to capture a 63-57 victory on Saturday afternoon in Siloam Springs. On January 17, JBU went to Shawnee, Oklahoma expecting to gather in their 4th Sooner Athletic Conference win of the young season, but were defeated by the Lady Cavaliers in that game 62-58. St. Gregory’s kept the game close today in the opening period despite the fact that JBU had a ten-point lead on three occasions. JBU’s Bethany Sites hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining in the first half to extend the lead to32-26 but St. Gregory’s Rhonda McCullar tossed in a 40- footer at the buzzer to close the gap at intermission to 32-29.
In the second stanza, the Golden Eagles extended the lead to 11 at 40-29 before McCullar finally put St. Gregory’s on the board with a three-pointer 4 minutes into period. JBU closed out the game with 16 straight free throws, the only points scored by the Golden Eagles in the last 10 minutes of the game.
With 15 points each, Ashley Wettengel and Kendra McCormick led the Golden Eagles offense. Wettengel also pulled down 7 rebounds, as did Sites to aid in the win.
“It was good to get this win after losing to them earlier and after the loss on Thursday. Our ball handling was too sloppy this afternoon giving up 19 turnovers,” said JBU Coach Jeff Soderquist.
The win moves the season record for JBU to 19-6 and the SAC record to 8-4. Next week is another travel week for the Golden Eagles with Thursday night’s 6:00 pm game against Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha and Saturday afternoon’s 1:00 pm game with Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva.
